The following are my final Bible study notes from our pastor’s study of the book of James.  Our main scripture text is taken from James 5:7-12.

Patience - James 5:7-12

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door. As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment. – James 5:7-12
I am to be patient when:

situations are out of my control. (verse 7)

difficult people are encountered. (verse 10)

personal suffering has no explanation. (verse 11)
Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. – Job 1:20
I am to be patient because:

the Lord is going to return. (verses 8-9)

the Lord rewards patience. (verse 11)
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. – Matthew 5:12
the Lord is doing real work even though it is unseen. (verse 11)
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. – Romans 8:28

I am being patient when:

I wait on God with expectancy. (verse 8)

I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait, and in His word do I hope. – Psalm 130:5

I wait on God quietly. (verses 9 and 12)
It is good that he waits silently for the salvation of the Lord. – Lamentations 3:26
But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. – Micah 7:7
