Week-long Lesson Plan Covering The Topic of the Starliner Rocket

Wednesday was June 5, 2024, when NASA launched the Starliner Rocket. This remarkable event sparked my curiosity about the Starliner Rocket, a spacecraft I was unfamiliar with when it made the news yesterday. Intrigued, I dug deeper into its history and design and created a week-long lesson plan outline covering the topic of the Starliner Rocket.

Keep in mind that this is a lesson plan outline.  You'll need to read and plan ahead so you can add in additional lessons and activities to teach the information to your students in an age-appropriate way.  Use this post as a springboard for "launching" ideas for teaching the material to your students.

Day 1: Introduction to the Starliner

- Overview of the Starliner rocket: history, purpose, and key components

- Discussion on the role of the Starliner in space exploration and its significance in the aerospace industry

Watch the launch!

Overview of the Starliner Rocket:

The Starliner, also known as the CST-100 Starliner, is a spacecraft developed by Boeing in collaboration with NASA. It is designed to transport crew and cargo to low Earth orbit, including the International Space Station (ISS).

History: Boeing was awarded a contract in 2010 as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Development (CCDev) program to develop a new spacecraft to transport astronauts to and from the ISS. The Starliner was designed to be a reusable space capsule capable of carrying up to seven passengers, focusing on providing safe and reliable crew transportation.

Purpose: The Starliner's mission is to provide NASA with a reliable and cost-effective means of ferrying astronauts to and from the ISS, reducing dependence on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for crew transport. But what makes this possible? Let's explore the Starliner's key components, each playing a crucial role in its operation:

1. Crew Module: This is the pressurized capsule in which astronauts live and work during their missions. It includes crew seating, environmental controls, and avionics systems.

2. Service Module: The unpressurized section of the spacecraft that houses the propulsion systems, avionics, and other support systems.

3. Launch Vehicle: The Starliner is launched atop an Atlas V rocket, provided by the United Launch Alliance, to reach orbit.

4. Abort and Launch Escape System: The spacecraft has an abort system to ensure crew safety during a launch emergency.

5. Docking System: The Starliner utilizes a docking system to autonomously dock with the ISS and other potential future space stations. This represents an important advancement in space transportation technology and is part of NASA's efforts to encourage commercial spaceflight capabilities.

Role of the Starliner in space exploration and its significance in the aerospace industry:

The Starliner plays a crucial role in advancing space exploration and has significant implications for the aerospace industry.

Role in Space Exploration: The Starliner is designed to provide safe and reliable transportation for astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS). Doing so helps sustain and support human presence in space, allowing continued research, experimentation, and living in a microgravity environment. The spacecraft also has the potential to support a wide range of scientific research and experiments conducted aboard the ISS, contributing to advancements in fields such as biology, materials science, and technology development.

Significance in the Aerospace Industry: The development and operation of the Starliner represent a significant collaboration between a private aerospace company, Boeing, and NASA. This partnership showcases the potential for commercial entities to play a pivotal role in space exploration, demonstrating the shift toward commercial spaceflight capabilities. The success of the Starliner has the potential to open doors for further commercial ventures in space, encouraging investment in space technology, infrastructure, and exploration. It also signifies a move towards more cost-effective and sustainable methods of transporting crew and cargo to and from space, which could have long-term implications for the aerospace industry.
